Tucked away in the heart of Old Town amongst bars and restaurants, this warm and friendly pub boasts the usual bevareages including real ale, snacks, jukebox and darts. A place to drink and chat amongst friends, where anyone and everyone is welcome. The Roaring Donkey, was originally called the Hart and Hound, but its name was changed a few years later to the Rising Sun, and then to the Roaring Donkey. The origin of the name is unclear, some say the name of the pub was due to a donkey that was tethered there during market days and when the donkey got hungry in the evening he would let out many loud roars to let his female owner know it was time to go home. Others beleive it was due to the roaring sound of the Swindon Advertiser's own noisy printing press across the road, or maybe it is a simple reference to the well-known condition of being roaring drunk. |
